Growing up in a small town in western Kansas, my parents owned and operated a restaurant. Every summer, we would get bikers from all across the country stopping by for a quick bite. As they dined, I would always walk around the parking lot and observed their bikes. The strappeddown riding gear, bug splattered windshields, weatherworn saddles... all in which made me wondered why one would go through so much trouble and endure the inconvenience of a motorcycle when such traveling could be accomplished in the comfort of a car. Being a youth at 8 years old, my first thought was economics. These folks must be traveling by motorcycle because they cannot afford a car. They must be miserable traveling thru the rain and sun on a such a loud bike. However, as I chatted with the bikers, they all seemed to be happy, cheerful, and not a worry in sight. I often asked them why are they traveling by bike instead of by car. Most of them replied by saying it is a life style of freedom. I must admit, I didnt understand it , but I was mystified and intrigued to learn more.
